Considering that the apocalypse was supposed to have occurred two years ago, the Winchester brothers are doing a good job of extending their journey.

The CW has renewed “Supernatural” for a seventh season alongside most of its returning lineup. “Supernatural” was created by Eric Kripke and debuted in 2005, with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester; a pair of brothers who hunt demons, vampires and other assorted monsters.

The series was originally envisioned as a five season story, culminating with the narrowly averted end of the world, but the show’s continued popularity has given it another season once again.

“The Vampire Diaries,” “America’s Next Top Model,” “90210″ AND “Gossip Girl” were also given early pickups for next season, leaving “One Tree Hill” as the only CW returning series to not get a renewal at this time.

“Nikita” and “Hellcats” remain in contention for next season, but both freshmen series are considered to be on the bubble and they are still in danger of cancellation.

“Smallville,” the CW’s long running superhero series is also ending this season without a confirmed successor in place. Back in the fall, the CW announced that “Raven” was in development as a potential replacement, but the lack of buzz on that project has led some to believe that it’s not happening any time soon.

The complete fall schedule for the CW will be announced next month.

MITCH PILEGGI (“X-Files,” “Sons of Anarchy”) RETURNS AS DEAN AND SAM’S GRANDFATHER

It’s a year later and Dean (Jensen Ackles) has given up hunting and is living with Lisa (guest star Cindy Sampson) and her son Ben (guest star Nicholas Elia).

Mysteriously freed from his cage in hell, Sam (Jared Padalecki) finds Dean and tells him he needs to rejoin the fight and introduces Dean to a world—a family—he never even knew existed: the Campbells, his mother’s family, lead by none other than their Grandfather Samuel (Pileggi). Phil Sgrricia directed the episode written by Sera Gamble.

Spoilers for what’s to come in season 6

Having penned the first episode of season six, Gamble was able to reveal a little more about where our favorite demon-hunting duo will be when we meet the Winchesters again, one year later. “Dean has been retired from hunting; he hung up the gun, he walked off the battlefield,” she explained, teasing that Dean will have fully embraced a normal, apple pie life, right down to the car he drives …

“He’s not driving the Impala,” she confirmed, much to our horror. “It’s under a tarp, and when he needs something from the trunk, he just lifts up the edge — it’s torturous!” We can’t argue with that, but why banish something that’s as synonymous with Dean as classic rock and a slice of pie, a car that’s arguably as beloved a character as Sam and Dean themselves? For precisely that reason, Gamble said. “The Impala represents everything to Dean — it represents his childhood, and more to the point, it represents hunting and it represents Sam. He’s not a hunter anymore and his brother is dead, so it’s under a tarp and he’s living a different life.”
